I gave up trying to compost. I didn't have a large enough space for it to work properly. For years, I tried all the methods from worm composting, leaf mold, vegitable-newspaper-cardboard- in bin- fenced in.etc. The BBC has gardening shows all year long and I've followed all their advice, from
Alan Tichmarsh, Carol Klein, Monty Don, and years ago Penelope woodhouse. The fact is, you need a really really big pile, and more time than I was willing to wait.
What you can do is contribute your garden waste to local land fill recycling center. I take my yard waste to the recycling area at the Scarboro Landfill in Harford Co. Md. I then get a pickup load of compost to take home. I 'm happy, my plants have enough compost to keep them happy, and my neighbors don't have to endure the rotting stench and oh yes,...the flies!

That is a great idea and many people here do that. Our city has a huge composting site, but I hesitate to bring it home due to the creeping charlie that many yards here have, I don't want to drag that home! And there could be viable seed in that compost. I get it for plants that will be in pots all season.
Otherwise, I do have a compost pile, not a huge one, and it does take TIME, all fine wine does! Your compost pile should not "stink". Granted it will draw flies, but if you keep it covered with grass after turning it, there will be fewer flies.
